London, 14 July 2011. Recognised for their strength in developing innovative solutions for customers, Century Logistics has won two industry awards for key staff during the annual UKWA awards held in London on Wednesday July 6th, 2011.
Paul Wilson, who was announced Warehouse Manager of the Year and Des Bailey, who received the Employee of the Year Award, were selected from among a record number of entries, reflecting the high standards achieved by this family owned business based in Thetford, East Anglia.
Roger Williams, UKWA Chief Executive Officer commented, “The Awards ceremony is the highlight of the year for our sector, and acts as a show case for the excellence we have throughout the industry. That Century Logistics had two winners in important categories speaks volumes for the quality of their operation. Century Logistics are a fast growing, ambitious company, who set a fine example in a very competitive market place.”
He further remarked that both Paul and Des represented a level of service which was exemplary in its dedication and consistency. Through their efforts, experience and tenacity for detail, they have continuously raised the bar for warehouse and logistics providers.
Des Bailey is the day shift supervisor for Goods in and Goods out at their warehouse operation near Bury St Edmunds. He was recommended for the award in recognition of the great work ethic he has shown since joining the company in 2005. He willingly accepts responsibility and is determined to continuously improve through ongoing training, a programme that Century Logistics has been proud to support.
2010 has provided his greatest challenge to date, and he has excelled. Century transferred their main contract –Dorel – from four separate sites to a new 140,000 sq ft facility at Saxham. During the change, Des and his team continued to achieve above the customer expected levels in terms of accuracy and deadlines. In addition to receiving at least 30 containers a week, and dispatching over 1000 orders, Des and his team were also handling the transfer of 5000 pallets a month to the new site. His Ops Director recognised this great achievement, saying, “Des has become a key member of staff. He has excelled at the roles we have given him, and he is taking forward the largest and most dynamic teams in the company.”
Paul Wilson took over the management of Pine Solutions contract with Century Logistics in 2009. In that time, he has overseen Internet-based retailer Pine Solution’s acquisition of The Cotswold Company and the integration of many extra stock lines. The contract now occupies 100,000sq ft (from 6000 sq ft). It has seen a 118% increase in orders dispatched - with a picking accuracy of 99.5% - as well as a larger QC operation.
In consultation with the customer, suppliers and couriers, Paul has implemented a number of new work practices and procedures with a resulting significant positive impact. Pine Solutions commended Paul, saying “he continually finds ways to increase productivity, and then manages to implement new work practices or technology so smoothly that everyone quickly adapts.” Assisted by Century Logistics through the management of the warehouse side of its operations, Pine Solutions has grown rapidly to become the UK’s largest online furniture retailer. It recently was featured in The Times Top 100 list of fastest growing companies in the UK.
Commenting on these outstanding achievements, Stephen Basey-Fisher, Century Logistics’ Managing Director, and founder of the family-owned warehouse and logistics business, felt justifiably proud of his skilled and dedicated staff. “I am delighted, but not completely surprised at the awards. The team at Century is one of the most skilled and dedicated in the business, working closely with customers to develop exactly what they need – so that both our businesses grow.”
He continued, “This recognition from the industry is a well-deserved accolade for Paul and Des, and we look forward to nominating other outstanding people next year!”
