Research highlights the importance of flexible warehouse capacity

New research into retailers’ supply chain concerns has highlighted the need for a flexible warehousing capacity, according to Century Logistics.
The research carried out by Retail Systems Research (RSR) showed that consumer demand for the lowest price (68%) and the unpredictability of demand in an uncertain economy (68%) are currently the leading supply chain business challenges to retailers.
Century Logistics Managing Director Stephen Basey-Fisher said the use of flexible warehousing capacity had a major role to play in helping ease concerns about demand.
“With unpredictable demand, it’s hard for retailers to forecast how much stock to hold,” he said.
“Hold too much stock and they are throwing away money by paying for warehousing capacity they do not need but hold too little stock and they could be left failing to fulfil demand, which means lost sales and damage to your reputation.
“If a retailer owns and operates its own warehousing, it’s very hard to increase and reduce space to match demand.”
Logistics providers should be able to provide flexible storage capacity to solve this problem, he added.
“This means that if retailers have a product that becomes a big seller, they can ramp up storage capacity to make sure they have enough stock to fulfil demand, while conversely, if sales slow - for example because the product is seasonal - they can reduce capacity in order to cut costs.”
However, warehousing companies can actually provide much more than just storage.
Some 3PL services can even go so far as to design and manage websites to sell off end-of-line and returned or repaired goods, which would help offset unpredictable demand.
The RSR results are from a survey conducted online from November 2011 - February 2012, with responses from 103 qualified retail respondents. 33% of respondents were from companies with more than $1 billion in 2011 revenue.

Century Logistics wins Customer Care award

Rapidly-growing logistics provider Century Logistics won the Customer Care Award on Wednesday night’s IFW awards, held in London.

To win, judges required Century to demonstrate flexible and innovative responses to a range of different customers’ needs, how it evaluated its customer care performance and the steps it had taken to improve customer care performance in response to customer feedback.

Century was also asked to demonstrate an effective strategy for problem resolution and recognition from relevant local, national or sector organisations, or achievement of independently accredited quality standards.

Its unique offering of bespoke after sales services set it apart from the competition.

Rather than providing just warehousing, the company has developed close relationships with its customers by understanding their business needs and reshaping their model to benefit both parties.

“We are delighted to win the Customer Care Award,” said Stephen Basey-Fisher, Managing Director.

“We know the service we provide is totally unique and it is excellent that we have been recognised for our pioneering work.”

Century offers a wide range of logistics and customer care services as well at its skills in goods handling and distribution. This enables customers to focus on core activities such as manufacturing and selling.

“We do more than just offer warehousing. We like to make our clients’ life as easy as possible so they can focus on their strengths. This partnership allows us and the customer to grow together.” Stephen Basey-Fisher added.

This award comes off the back of similar success for Century at the UKWA awards, where it won Warehouse Manager of the Year and Employee of the Year.

Century urges online retailers to prepare for Christmas rush

Century Logistics has urged online retailers to ensure storage and distribution operations are prepared for ‘Cyber Monday’ - the busiest day of the year for online sales.

Online retailer specialist Amazon has predicted that online sales will peak on Monday 5 December this year, with the highest volume of customer orders expected to be placed at 9pm.

In recent years, the first Monday in December has been Amazon.co.uk's busiest day with orders for over 2.3 million items being placed on Monday 6 December last year.

Century Logistics, which offers specialist distribution services to online retailers, has urged e-tailers to make sure their distribution networks are able to cope with the expected huge surge in demand.

Century Logistics Managing Director Stephen Basey-Fisher says: “Every year, the number of people shopping for Christmas presents via the internet increases.

“Delays to online orders are particularly unacceptable at this time of year because failure to deliver on time means that someone could go without a Christmas present.

“Online retailers need to be prepared for this surge in demand by ensuring they have flexible warehouse capacity to enable them to hold necessary stock levels in the run up to this period and make sure they have access to the delivery capacity they need as it becomes particularly strained at this time of year.”

Basey-Fisher adds: “The Christmas rush is an excellent opportunity for companies to increase sales but they must make sure they operate a supply chain that can meet that demand.

“We’ve seen through our partnership with soap producer ‘Just-a-Soap’ how an online company can grow sales if it works with a trusted logistics partner that has access to flexible warehousing to increase stock storage when demand surges – such as during the Christmas rush.”

Shopping comparison website Kelkoo predicts that overall, UK shoppers will spend one fifth (19.4%) of their Christmas budget online totalling £13.4bn.

Total online spending will increase by 16.3% compared with 2010, it added.

Century urges Christmas shoppers to order early

London, 5th October 2011 - Leading UK supply chain company Century Logistics warns Christmas shoppers to buy presents as soon as possible as weather experts predict early snow fall – despite the Indian summer that the country is currently enjoying.

Currently the UK is basking in an unexpected heat wave, but forecasters expect the weather to turn before the end of the week and snow is predicted to fall throughout the Christmas period.

Century, which counts 60% of its customers as online retailers, made the warning after shoppers were last year left disappointed when deliveries to warehouses, shops and homes were delayed as ports, airports and roads were closed because of winter blizzards.

Last minute online shoppers were particularly hard hit by the delays.

Century Logistics Managing Director Stephen Basey-Fisher says: “The internet is a great way to do your Christmas shopping as it can save you time and money and there is often a wider range of products to choose from.

“But we recommend that shoppers make their purchases as early as possible in case the weather does cause disruptions to retailers’ supply chains.

“This is especially true for those buying goods online as this type of shopping is often left until the very last minute and the amount of time it takes to deliver is sometimes forgotten.”

Basey-Fisher’s warning comes with just 82 days until Christmas day.

“We can make sure our warehouse inventories are fully prepared in the run up to Christmas, but blizzards can result in parcel companies struggling to make the final delivery,” he adds.

“But we are already in contact with our carriers to make sure they are fully prepared should bad weather strike as predicted.”

Basey-Fisher says the November-December period was already the busiest time of year for online and high street sales, which means supply chains were already under pressure.

Figures from global e-retail organisation Interactive Media In Retail Group (IMRG) and technology consultant Capgemini showed that online retail sales hit £5.46 billion in December 2010, an increase of 17% compared with the same month the previous year.

Meanwhile, overall retail sales by value in December 2010 increased by 0.9% compared with November, according to the Office for National Statistics, although this was lower than expected as the winter weather stopped shoppers making it to the high street.

Basey-Fisher’s warning comes as weather experts forecast another year of difficult weather conditions.

Long-range forecaster James Madden from Exacta Weather warns he expects to see signs of moderate to heavy snowfalls as early as October or November in certain parts of the UK.

He expects November, December, January and February to feature largely below-average temperatures across many parts of the UK, and it is likely that temperature and snowfall records will be broken within this time frame.

Another forecaster, from Netweather, Paul Michaelwaite, warns widespread snowfall could be seen as early as November.

In December last year, blizzards resulted in large sections of the M25 being closed, leaving hauliers stranded overnight, as parts of the UK saw up to 76cm of snow and temperatures plunged to -19c.

Kent was virtually cut off from the rest of the country, while a 32km stretch of the M8 was closed for 48 hours because of snow and ice.

Heathrow and Gatwick airports were also closed for a couple days because of the weather, while the UK’s busiest container ports, Felixstowe and Southampton suffered with delays.

Sweet Smell of Success for Century Logistics

Fragrances & Toiletries International (FTI) has appointed Bury St Edmunds-based Century Logistics to handle its warehousing and distribution as it gears up for the Christmas rush.

Launched 10 years ago, the privately-owned UK company produces more than 10 million items a year, including toiletries, perfumes and gift sets, for a wide range of labels and retailers, both premium and high street. Brands include No Fear, Dunlop and Golddigga.

The products are sourced mainly from Europe and Asia and distributed throughout the UK and to over 50 countries worldwide.

The on-going growth of FTI’s business made the company realise it needed expert help to ensure fast and reliable deliveries.

Chris Turner, FTI Purchasing Director, says: “We rented warehouse space and managed it ourselves but realised that, as we grew and it became more and more complicated, we were just not that good at it. Our customers have high expectations and we will be fined or orders will be sent back if it is not exactly right. We needed a partner to take away the headache.”

FTI has selected Century Logistics, with 400,000 sq ft of warehousing in East Anglia and a reputation for problem-solving and paying attention to detail, as its logistics partner.

The two companies have been integrating IT systems and all FTI’s stock is now coming into Century’s warehouse in Thetford where staff are even performing some reworking and repacking work as volumes increase for the peak of Christmas demand.

Stephen Basey-Fisher, Managing Director of Century Logistics, says he is delighted that FTI has chosen Century as its logistics partner. “Like us, they are innovative, open to new ideas and ready to take on new challenges. We believe that both companies can prosper by working as partners.”

Century Logistics hooks new contract

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Century Logistics hooks new contract
London, 20 September 2011 - Century Logistics has won a contract with importer Hookes to distribute its furniture and giftware to stores and retailers throughout the UK and Ireland.
The goods, ranging from art deco mirrors and bedside tables to soft furnishings, are imported from the Far East through Felixstowe and then taken to the nearby Century warehouse at Thetford before onward distribution.
Hookes, a family-run business set up about 20 years ago, used to operate its own warehousing and distribution but realised that Century’s expertise and facilities offered it a more efficient solution.
“Hookes is a growing company so using our shared warehousing allows it to expand its business in line with demand, without making an upfront commitment to a larger warehouse,” explains Stephen Basey-Fisher, Century Managing Director. “We find that many companies, especially those selling primarily over the internet, benefit from using our warehouse and distribution services while they concentrate on their core business.”
Chico Hooke says:”We like the fact that, as well as being a private company which can offer a more personalised service, Century has experience working with other furniture importers as our goods can be quite fragile and need specialist handling. Also, as we pay only for the pallet spaces and services we use, it is a cost-effective and manageable service offering.”
Century Logistics, a rapidly growing logistics company, specialises in warehousing and innovative bespoke aftersales services.
It has more than 400,000 sq ft of warehousing and 140 staff in locations in East Anglia, with a wide range of clients including Dorel, the world’s biggest nursery products company. It has established a reputation for problem-solving, using its expertise in rework, product repair, handling customer service calls and selling end-of-line and returned stock via eBay and other outlets, for a wide range of customers.

Century Logistics customers benefit from phenomenal eBay sales

Century Logistics, an innovative warehousing and after sales company, is celebrating this month after enjoying phenomenal online sales for its customers. Its figures for July boast an impressive taking of over £90,000 from eBay sales alone. This is nearly a 50% increase on June’s figures.

From its new warehouse in Bury St Edmunds, Century’s online retail service, one of many extras it provides, has delivered huge sales. The service allows clients to distribute their end of line, returned and repaired stock while also giving consumers the chance to pick up bargains on eBay.

With a dedicated team of programmers, photographers and designers working on Century’s eBay sales service, it offers clients a completely professional service. Selling stock on eBay allows Century’s clients between 25 and 70 % of standard retail price on items which is nearly double than can be expected from selling as a job lot.

Managing Director Stephen Basey-Fisher says: “The eBay sale for our clients is one of the many added value tasks we undertake for our clients. We take the difficult jobs and do them well. If they have stock left over we offer a service to sell on eBay so the consumer gets a good product and the client can get some extra storage space as well as make money.”

This impressive figure is the latest in a long line of achievements for Stephen Basey-Fisher since he started the company 15 years ago in a small warehouse. Following rapid growth, the operation was distributed around six warehouses, only for further expansion to come as it moved into a 140,000 sq ft. site at Bury St Edmunds last year.

Mr Basey-Fisher adds: “These incredible sales are testament to the value of the extra services we provide. We not only distribute our clients’ goods, we also provide an after sales service including re-packaging, repairing and rebranding. That is what makes us successful and pioneers in this industry.”

Moving into the 15 metre high warehouse, which is the highest in East Anglia, has allowed all parts of the Century Logistics business to work under one roof. It has also given the company more docking bays as well as extra storage capacity. However, further plans are afoot as warehouse space is rapidly filling up.

Mr Basey-Fisher says: “We’ve only been here just under a year but we’re already around 95% full. We’ve started looking at adding another warehouse to keep up with the demand.”

Century Logistics Wins UKWA Awards

London, 14 July 2011. Recognised for their strength in developing innovative solutions for customers, Century Logistics has won two industry awards for key staff during the annual UKWA awards held in London on Wednesday July 6th, 2011.

Paul Wilson, who was announced Warehouse Manager of the Year and Des Bailey, who received the Employee of the Year Award, were selected from among a record number of entries, reflecting the high standards achieved by this family owned business based in Thetford, East Anglia.

Roger Williams, UKWA Chief Executive Officer commented, “The Awards ceremony is the highlight of the year for our sector, and acts as a show case for the excellence we have throughout the industry. That Century Logistics had two winners in important categories speaks volumes for the quality of their operation. Century Logistics are a fast growing, ambitious company, who set a fine example in a very competitive market place.”

He further remarked that both Paul and Des represented a level of service which was exemplary in its dedication and consistency. Through their efforts, experience and tenacity for detail, they have continuously raised the bar for warehouse and logistics providers.

Des Bailey is the day shift supervisor for Goods in and Goods out at their warehouse operation near Bury St Edmunds. He was recommended for the award in recognition of the great work ethic he has shown since joining the company in 2005. He willingly accepts responsibility and is determined to continuously improve through ongoing training, a programme that Century Logistics has been proud to support.

2010 has provided his greatest challenge to date, and he has excelled. Century transferred their main contract –Dorel – from four separate sites to a new 140,000 sq ft facility at Saxham. During the change, Des and his team continued to achieve above the customer expected levels in terms of accuracy and deadlines. In addition to receiving at least 30 containers a week, and dispatching over 1000 orders, Des and his team were also handling the transfer of 5000 pallets a month to the new site. His Ops Director recognised this great achievement, saying, “Des has become a key member of staff. He has excelled at the roles we have given him, and he is taking forward the largest and most dynamic teams in the company.”

Paul Wilson took over the management of Pine Solutions contract with Century Logistics in 2009. In that time, he has overseen Internet-based retailer Pine Solution’s acquisition of The Cotswold Company and the integration of many extra stock lines. The contract now occupies 100,000sq ft (from 6000 sq ft). It has seen a 118% increase in orders dispatched - with a picking accuracy of 99.5% - as well as a larger QC operation.
In consultation with the customer, suppliers and couriers, Paul has implemented a number of new work practices and procedures with a resulting significant positive impact. Pine Solutions commended Paul, saying “he continually finds ways to increase productivity, and then manages to implement new work practices or technology so smoothly that everyone quickly adapts.” Assisted by Century Logistics through the management of the warehouse side of its operations, Pine Solutions has grown rapidly to become the UK’s largest online furniture retailer. It recently was featured in The Times Top 100 list of fastest growing companies in the UK.
Commenting on these outstanding achievements, Stephen Basey-Fisher, Century Logistics’ Managing Director, and founder of the family-owned warehouse and logistics business, felt justifiably proud of his skilled and dedicated staff. “I am delighted, but not completely surprised at the awards. The team at Century is one of the most skilled and dedicated in the business, working closely with customers to develop exactly what they need – so that both our businesses grow.”

He continued, “This recognition from the industry is a well-deserved accolade for Paul and Des, and we look forward to nominating other outstanding people next year!”

Strategically located in East Anglia to access the national transport network, Century Logistics has evolved to become a recognised driver of innovative solutions within the warehousing and logistics industry. Driven by a dedication to total customer support, Century Logistics provides warehousing, distribution and customer care services for companies across the UK.

Internet retail surpasses high street figures

Internet retail surpasses high street figures
London. In what seems to be yet another blow to the high street, the British Retail Consortium has reported that May retail sales have dipped as customers held back on their spending. The previously reported rises in March and April now appear to have been distorted by a late Easter, the bank holidays and good weather. And unfortunately, the future does not appear to be any better, as a leading analyst house reported that long term prospects appear stagnant for the next decade.

However, this outlook contrasts sharply against the £5.2 billion spent online in April by UK shoppers, a significant increase of 19% on April 2010. According to the latest figures from the IMRG CapGeminin e-Retail Sales Index, the strong online growth was driven by exactly the same factors constraining the high street, namely the bank holidays, Royal Wedding and the warm sunny weather, which drove consumers online to update their wardrobes. Compared with April 2010, the sector climbed a staggering 32%; 8% more than March 2011. Another sector benefitting from the warmer weather was home and garden, which probably received a boost by thoughts of barbeques and summer parties. The sector grew 14% year-on-year and 11% month-on-month. Of all the sectors, alcohol saw the most significant growth, increasing 55% year-on-year and up 20% on March. Most significantly, the average order value reached £174, the highest basket value since November 2007, before the start of the recession, and nearly double that of April 2010
As Chris Webster, head of retail consulting and technology at Capgemini commented in the report, “April was a very strong month for the online retail sector. 19% annual growth demonstrates, once again, the value consumers and retailers alike are placing on e-commerce. This is clearly evidenced by the fact that consumers continue to spend on-line, despite rising inflation and stagnant wages, resulting in a very flat performance on the high-street.”

“All in all, a positive outlook for internet based companies,’’ remarked Stephen Basey-Fisher, Managing Director for Century Logistics. As a trusted Third Party Logistics Provider (3PL) for various internet based retailers, such as Floorsupplies.co.uk, the largest online flooring business in the UK; Pinesolutions.co.uk, the largest online furniture supplier in UK and various other businesses of all sizes from start ups to more established enterprises, Century Logistics has actually experienced this boom in internet retailing.

As Stephen continued, “We are now handling internet based retailers from start ups to the largest businesses online. What these customers require is consistent quality service, space and speedy deliveries. We are their trusted right hand team. As is often the case with most internet based companies that started off as home-businesses, we have helped many of our customers make the transition towards moving stock out of their homes and into our warehouses, allowing them to focus on their growth and not on their warehousing, stock and handling issues. There is nothing more rewarding than watching a customer grow and be extremely profitable. The internet is a level playing field and our customers are growing very fast.”

With over 350,000 square feet of high quality warehousing situated along the A11, Century Logistics has carved out it niche in the e-tailing community. Century is purposely based in South West Norfolk to take advantage of very cost effective warehousing, as well as the proximity to the national road network and the Port of Felixstowe. Companies importing in bulk can be accommodated with ease and Century has a selection of sites, sizes of buildings and racking configurations to handle any type of product. Ends
